Engine Oil Pump - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install".

  2. Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Remove".

Note: The engine oil pump is mounted on the No. 1 crankshaft main bearing cap. The engine oil pump can be removed without removing the front housing if the No. 1 crankshaft main bearing cap is removed. In order to remove the main bearing cap bolt for the No. 1 crankshaft journal, use Tooling (C). The engine oil pump is then removed from the main bearing cap.

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the nut and bolt (4) from the bracket.

  2. Remove bolts (5) and suction pipe (6).

  3. Remove bolts (1) and (3) from oil supply tube assembly (2). Remove the oil supply tube assembly (2) from the cylinder block and the engine oil pump.

  4. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (7). Remove washer (8) and idler gear (10) from shaft (12). Use tooling (B) to remove bushing (9) from the idler gear.

  5. Remove bolts (13) that fasten the engine oil pump to the main bearing cap. Remove engine oil pump (11).

  6. Inspect shaft (12) for wear or damage. If necessary, remove the bolts for the main bearing cap. Remove dowel (14) from the main bearing cap. Use a suitable press to remove shaft (12) from the main bearing cap.
