Water pumps on 3500 engines have changed. The mating surface between the impeller and the shaft has changed from a tapered joint to a straight joint. The former parts are no longer serviced. The table provides a cross reference between the part numbers for the former pumps and the part numbers for the new pumps. In most cases, rebuild kits and remanufactured pumps are available. The rebuild kits are intended for use with both the former pump and the new pump.

The procedure for disassembling the new water pumps and assembling the new water pumps is similar to the procedures for the former pump. During disassembly, a puller should be used to remove the impeller from the shaft. During assembly, the impeller should be pressed onto the shaft after the shaft is assembled into the housing assembly. Prior to pressing the impeller onto the shaft, the impeller and the shaft should be at room temperature. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the shaft before pressing the impeller onto the shaft. The force that is required will be a minimum of 3,855 kg (8,500 lb) with a nominal force of 14,060 kg (31,000 lb).
Note: While you are pressing the impeller onto the shaft, force should not be placed on the housing assembly. The shaft should be placed in a fixture that is designed to absorb the load of the press while the impeller is pressed onto the shaft.
When the face of the impeller and the face of the shaft are flush, the proper assembly dimensions for the water seal and the other pump components has been reached.
