The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects all of the following conditions:
- The engine has been running for at least 2 seconds.
- Coolant flow is lost for at least 2 seconds.
- The ground level shutdown switch has not been used in order to shut down the engine.
- Engine speed is within 50 rpm of low idle.
System Response:
The ECM will log the warning. The warning is cancelled if coolant flow resumes for 1 second.
Possible Performance Effect:
- None
Troubleshooting:
- There may be a problem with the cooling system.
- There may be a problem with the coolant flow switch.
- There may be a problem with the ground level shutdown switch.
Test Step 1. Check for "ACTIVE" Diagnostic Codes
- Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
- Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
- Check for any Active Diagnostic Codes or Logged Diagnostic Codes.
Expected Result:
There should be no diagnostic codes that are present.
Results:
- OK - Proceed to test step 2.
- Not OK -
Repair: Repair the diagnostic codes that are present. Refer to the appropriate topic in the "Troubleshooting With a Diagnostic Code" section of this manual.
Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.

Test Step 2. Perform a Check of the Cooling System
- Perform a check of the cooling system. Refer to the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature is Too High" for possible causes.
Expected Result:
There are no problems with the cooling system.
Results:
- OK - There may be an intermittent problem.
Repair: Monitor the operation of the engine.
If the problem is intermittent, refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".
Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.
