Introduction
The Test Harness for Machine Electronic Control Modules (ECM) is used to communicate between the ECM and Electronic Technician (ET). This harness can be used to eliminate the machine harness as a cause of an ECM error. This harness can also be used to flash an ECM with the application software before the ECM is installed on the machine.

If ET will not communicate with the machine ECM, perform the following procedure.
- Turn the key switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the machine harness from the machine ECM.
- Connect the Test Harness's 40-pin connector (110-6848 Connector Plug ) to the ECM connector J1 (1) .
- Connect the Test Harness's red wire to B+ (+24 DCV). Connect the Test Harness's black wire to B- (GND).
- Connect a laptop computer to the 171-4400 Communication Adapter Gp .
- Connect the Test Harness's 9-pin connector (8T-8736 Connector Receptacle ) to the 171-4400 Communication Adapter Gp .
- Use WinFlash in order to detect the machine ECM. If ET communicates with the machine ECM (while the test harness is installed), the machine harness may be faulty.
- If the machine ECM is not detected (while the test harness is installed), use the following procedure to check the test harness.
- Ensure that there is +24 DCV on the 40-pin connector's Pin 1. Ensure that Pin 2 on the 40-pin connector is connected to GND.
- Verify continuity between the 40-pin connector's Pin 9 and the 9-pin connector's Pin D.
- Verify continuity between the 40-pin connector's Pin 3 and the 9-pin connector's Pin E.
- Ensure that the 171-4400 Communication Adapter Gp and the Communication Adapter Cable work properly.
- If the test harness, communication adapter, and the communication adapter cable work properly and there is still no communication between ET and the machine ECM, the machine ECM may be faulty.
