- Marine Engines:
- 3126B (S/N: 3GS; 9ZF)
Description of Change: Jacket water heaters are now available for use on these marine engines. A jacket water heater will reduce the amount of white smoke at start-up when these marine engines operate in cool climates or cool sea water. The jacket water heater is controlled by a sensor that is installed near the water temperature regulator. The sensor regulates the jacket water heater in order to maintain a jacket water coolant temperature of 60 °C (140 °F).
Adaptable To: The new 213-7329 Jacket Water Heater Gp (120 VAC) and 213-7330 Jacket Water Heater Gp (240 VAC) are adaptable to all 3126B (S/N: 3GS; 9ZF) Marine Engines.
The new 213-7329 Jacket Water Heater Gp and 213-7330 Jacket Water Heater Gp (240 VAC) are nonserviceable at the group level. Table 1 identifies the components of the new 213-7329 Jacket Water Heater Gp (120 VAC). Table 2 identifies the components of the new 213-7330 Jacket Water Heater Gp (240 VAC). The components of both Jacket Water Heater Gps are identical except the Jacket Water Heater Elements.

- Drain the coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7242.
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
Pressurized System: Hot coolant can cause serious burns. To open the cooling system filler cap, stop the engine and wait until the cooling system components are cool. Loosen the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure. |

Note: Both Jacket Water Heater Gps must be supplied by a grounded power source.
- Remove plug (9) from the cylinder block of the engine. Lubricate the hole in the cylinder block with glycerin or antifreeze.
- Lubricate the seal on the jacket water heater element (1) with glycerin or antifreeze. Install jacket water heater element (1) in the position that is shown in Illustration 1. Remove the plastic cap and tap the jacket water heater element into the cylinder block with a driver that is 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) to 38 mm (1.50 inch) in diameter.
- Remove plug (8) from the engine. Remove the sensor (7) from cord (5). Install the sensor (7) in the hole for plug (8). Tighten the sensor to a torque of 8 N·m (6 lb ft).
- Route cord (5), as shown. Connect the cord to the Jacket Water Heater Element (1). Connect the cord to sensor (7). Install clips (2). Fasten the clips with bolts (3) and washers (4). Retain the cord to the clips with cable straps (6) .
- Fill the engine with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7242.
- Make the necessary electrical connections to the electrical system of the vessel.
