Introduction

The Caterpillar Factory Passwords System (FPS) is used to calculate passwords that allow service personnel to access protected operations. The FPS may also be known as Level III. Many of Caterpillars electronic control modules require passwords in order to change items such as fuel settings and engine horsepower.

If a cost is associated with the operation (engine horsepower or optional attachment software), the FPS will bill the organization that performed the service. All operations are stored in a database that is accessible by Caterpillar and dealer personnel.

The Factory Passwords System (FPS) is available on the Internet at "https://fps.cat.com". The FPS copies the "JUZ1xx" application that was available on the Caterpillar network in "AIMS".

Note: The screens that are shown within the document may change over time. Also, if an error message is encountered, use the "Help" screen for additional information and support.

Passwords may also be required in order to install optional attachment software. This instruction explains the process of determining the price of an attachment feature, for ordering attachment features, and for the installation of attachment features.

Explanation of Software Enabled Attachments

Certain attachments are enabled in the product software by a password. This section explains the following processes:

  • Determining the price of an attachment feature

  • Ordering attachment features

  • Installation of attachment features

Some software enabled attachments may include additional features. These features include:

  • ECM Swap Detection: The ECM will notify the operator and service person if an ECM that contains an attachment is moved to another machine.

  • Temporary Installation: Allows the dealer to turn on the feature for a service interval without charge, allowing a new ECM in a remote location to be replaced and fully enabled (temporarily) without passwords. The Temporary Installation feature also can be used as a one-time free trial to let a customer try out a feature.

  • Overflash Protection: This feature prevents the user from inadvertently flashing over software that contains a password protected software enabled attachment. If this software was flashed over, the new software would cause the user to obtain new passwords in order to reinstall the feature.

Permanent Installation - Electronic Technician (ET) Service Tool

  1. On the ET Configuration Screen (Illustration 15), the attachment features will appear as regular configuration parameters.

    Illustration 15g00948084

    ET Configuration screen

  1. When you attempt to install one of the attachments, a screen will pop up requesting factory passwords. Refer to Illustration 16.

    Illustration 16g00948087

    Factory password screen

  1. After the passwords are entered into the service tool, the regular configuration window will appear.

Temporary Installation

Some attachments are capable of temporarily installing features. When a feature is temporarily installed, no billing is involved. There are two methods to temporarily installing an attachment feature:

  • Before the ECM clock has accumulated 50 hours

  • After the ECM clock has accumulated 50 hours

Before the ECM Clock Has Accumulated 50 Hours

If the ECM has less than 50 hours and the desired feature has never been permanently installed, the dealer may temporarily install the feature. Turn on the feature by changing the temporary installation status from "uninstalled" to "installed". There is no charge for a temporary installation and there will be no password prompt. Refer to Illustration 17.

Illustration 17g00948089

Change parameter value screen

After the ECM Clock Has Accumulated 50 Hours

If an ECM has more than 50 hours, a password will be required to change the temporary installation status from "uninstalled" to "installed". When the user attempts to change the temporary installation status, a new window will pop up. This window (Illustration 2) will prompt the user for the information that is required by the factory password system. To be granted a password, the user must enter all of the required information. The factory password system will grant the user passwords without charge.

Once this status has been changed, a free use timer will begin to count down. Customer allocated free use time is determined on an application basis. Once the free use time has expired, the feature will automatically be deactivated on the next startup. At that time, the temporary free use option for that feature will become unavailable.

Enabling the Attachment

Once an attachment has been installed, the attachment can be enabled and disabled by using a parameter found on the configuration screen. A factory password is not needed to enable or disable an installed attachment. However, customers can set up their own passwords in order to protect a feature from being enabled or disabled. Refer to Illustration 18.

Customer passwords can be changed at any time. Customer passwords are changed individually (that is, password 1 is changed independent of password 2). If a password has never been entered, the service tool will allow the password to be changed immediately. If a password has already been entered, ET will first prompt the user to enter the current customer password before allowing this password to be changed. If a customer forgets the password, a service technician must get a factory password to reset the customer passwords. When customer passwords are reset, the Total Tattletale is incremented and all of the old passwords are rendered obsolete.

ECM Replacement

If an ECM fails, there is a mechanism to install the attachment on a replacement ECM without charge. This process requires the use of the failed ECMs serial number. The ECMs 10-digit serial number is stamped on the outside of the ECM. Refer to Illustration 19.

Illustration 19g00949533

ECM Serial Number Format

Follow the steps required for permanent installation of the new ECM. Refer to Step 9.b in the previous section titled ""Factory Password System (FPS)" ".

ECM Replacement Errors

Table 1
Possible Error Messages
Message     Explanation
Previous ECM Serial Number has not been billed for this reason code.     The ECM being replaced did not have this software-enabled attachment registered. To install the software-enabled attachment, enter the appropriate billing information to accept the charges associated with this attachment.
This ECM Serial Number reported as failed - no passwords will be generated. (1)     No passwords can be generated because the ECM was previously reported as a failed ECM. Verify the ECM serial number. If necessary, call the Caterpillar Software Attachment support number.
Passwords have already been generated for this combination.     Passwords have already been generated for this particular product serial number and previous ECM serial number combination.
( 1 ) Refer to Step 9.b in the previous section titled ""Factory Password System (FPS)" ".

Swap Detection

ECM swap detection is performed in order to prevent the inadvertent movement of an ECM that is used for a software-enabled attachment. Swap detection uses a "buddy system" with another ECM on the product. The specific software-enabled attachment documentation should specify if this feature is active and which ECM's are involved in the detection.

If either "buddy" involved in this feature is swapped with a dissimilar ECM, the software-enabled attachment will go into a safe mode (and usually turn off). The software-enabled attachment will then report an event in order to notify the service person and operator that the product may have changed functionality. The event will indicate "Feature Mismatch with ECM Swap".

There are two ways to clear this event. The easiest way is to swap the ECMs back to their original locations. If the ECM's are not swapped back, the event will become inactive after 20 hours (allowing enough time to inform most operators of changed functionality). Passwords are required to leave the ECM's swapped and to clear the logged event. Before clearing this event, update the product serial number on the swapped ECM's. A configuration item will become available on the service tool configuration screen called "Premium Feature Mismatch Reconciliation Status". This parameter can also appear as "Recon Status". Refer to Illustration 20.

Passwords must be obtained in order to change the status of "Recon Status" from "Not OK" to "OK". When the status of "Recon Status" is changed from "Not OK" to "OK", the event will be cleared. Once the event is cleared, the ECM that contains the software-enabled attachment will assume that the attachments movement was intentional. The ECM will then return to its original status.

Configuration Screen - Recon Status

Overflash Protection

Overflash protection prevents the software-enabled attachment from being lost during flash. If the software that is being flashed will overwrite the status of an installed password-protected attachment, flash will be prevented.

Additional Information

  1. The features that have been discussed are all non-returnable features.

  1. Ensure that any required hardware is installed prior to activating the software.

  1. The "Estimate" function on the fps.cat.com website will not provide price estimates for software-enabled attachments. The price is determined by looking up the part number in Antares. For example, the following Illustrations (Illustration 21 and Illustration 22) are examples of a part associated with a software-enabled attachment.

Note: Only Caterpillar dealers have access to the Antares system. If you do not have access to the Antares system, for the price of software-enabled attachments, consult your Caterpillar dealer.

  1. On some engine-based features, the serial number of the engine is used instead of the Product serial number. For tracking purposes, be sure to record this serial number.

  1. Subsequent passwords for the same serial number, ECM serial number, and feature combination are free. If you are unsure if previous passwords were registered, go to the "History" area of the fps.cat.com website. From this website, you can check the registered history of your product.

  1. A password is available (without charge) for ECM replacement. However, once this feature is used, the ECM reported as the failed ECM will no longer be serviced.
