Start By:

  1. Remove the piston motor (hydraulic cooling fan). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Motor (Hydraulic Cooling Fan) - Remove" in this manual.

Note: The weight of the fan pump is 17 kg (37 lb).

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove fittings (1) from block (2).

  2. Remove bolts (3) from block (2). Remove block (2).

  3. Remove O-ring seals (6) from cover (5).

  4. Remove bolts (4). Remove cover (5).

  5. Remove O-ring seal (7) from cover (5).

  6. Remove port plate (8) from cover (5).

    Note: Take note of the slot in the reverse side of port plate (8). The slot will receive a pin in cover (5).

  7. Remove dowel (9) from cover (5). Remove bearing cup (10) from cover (5).

  8. Remove bearing (11) from shaft (12).

  9. Remove shim (13) from shaft (12).

  10. Remove rotating group (15) and shaft (12) from housing (14).

  11. Remove shaft (12) from rotating group (15).

  12. Install shaft (12) into a suitable press. Remove bearing (16) from shaft (12).

  13. Remove swashplate (17) from the top of rotating group (15).

    Note: Take note of the notches in the top of swashplate (17).

  14. Remove pistons and plate (18) from barrel (19).

    Place a mark on the pistons prior to removal from barrel (19). The pistons must be returned to the original position.

  15. Remove guide (20) from barrel (19).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Sudden release of spring force can cause injury.

    To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the spring pressure.


  16. Rotate barrel (19). Place barrel (19) into a suitable press.

  17. Compress the spring. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove snap ring (21). Slowly release the pressure on the spring.

  18. Remove snap ring (21), spring (22), washer (23), and pins (24) from barrel (19).

  19. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove snap ring (25) from housing (14).

  20. Remove seal (26) from housing (14).

  21. Rotate the pump housing. Remove bearing cup (27). Remove plate (28).

    Note: Plate (28) is located under bearing cup (27).

  22. Remove plug (29). Remove O-ring seal (30).
