Power Module Switchgear (Low Voltage and Medium Voltage) Caterpillar

Standby Operation

Usage:

PM3508 BLM
Standby Operation is automatically initiated when the utility circuit breaker is open and the contacts for the "UTILITY AUX CONTACT" are open. (No electrical continuity exists.) The generator operates as an isochronous machine that is isolated from the utility supply for standby operation. The controls enable automatic standby operation. Automatic operation is initiated locally or automatic operation is initiated remotely by the customer's SCADA system or the building control system. Dead bus closing is allowed for standby operation.

The standby start signal is provided locally or the standby start signal is provided remotely by the customer. This is done by establishing continuity between the "STANDBY START" contacts. When a standby start signal is received, the genset will automatically perform the following functions:

  • Start

  • Attain the rated speed and voltage.

  • Close the generator circuit breaker onto the dead bus.

The customer must ensure that the load bus is disconnected from the utility supply. The customer must ensure that the load is less than the block loading capability of the genset. The generator circuit breaker will trip open when the generator circuit breaker receives a standby shutdown signal. This is done by establishing continuity between the "STANDBY STOP" contacts. The engine will run without a load for the cooldown period. Then, the engine will automatically shut down. The utility may then be reconnected to the load bus.

Ensure that all targets for the generator protective relays have been reset. Ensure that the emergency stop push buttons are reset.

Note: Examine the "UTILITY AUX CONTACT". If the indicator for "UTILITY BREAKER CLOSED" is illuminated, a jumper is installed at the "UTILITY AUX CONTACT" for peak shaving. This jumper is required for base load operation because the "UTILITY AUX CONTACT" contact is not available.
