The decisions for shifting are made by the control module's electronic circuits. The circuits activate the transmission solenoid valves. The control module is connected to the machine's wiring harness through a connector with 40 contacts. The shift lever transmission control is connected to the transmission electronic control module through a connector with 12 contacts.
Input and Output
The CAT data link is bidirectional. This allows the control module to receive information and this allows the control module to send information. Information is shared between the transmission electronic control module, and the service tools.
Inputs
Operational Inputs
The operational inputs provide information about operator requests to the control module. These inputs receive information from the following components:
- Shift Lever Switches
- AUTO/MANUAL Switch
- Downshift Switch
The switches provide an open to the battery or the switches provide an open to the ground.
Harness Code Inputs
The inputs for the harness code are connector contacts 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. The inputs tell the control module the action of the diagnostic indicator. The harness code inputs also identify the machine type.
Sensor Inputs
An AC signal is present at the sensor input. The signal represents the transmission speed (connector contact 5) or the signal represents the engine speed (connector contact 6). The ECM measures the frequency (Hz) of the sensor. The ECM uses this speed information in order to make shifting decisions.
Outputs
Speedometer Output
The speedometer output (connector contact 7) sends information from the transmission speed sensor to the speedometer. When a signal from the transmission speed sensor is present, the speedometer output is activated.
Diagnostic Indicator
When a system fault is detected the control module activates the diagnostic indicator (connector contact 30). The diagnostic indicator is illuminated. The diagnostic indicator also displays the fault information by flashing the fault code while the module is in the service mode.
Solenoid Outputs
When a direction and a gear are selected by the operator or the control module, the control module sends a voltage to the appropriate solenoid outputs which energize transmission solenoids. The solenoid outputs are connector contacts 31 through 36.
