Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Drain the oil from the engine oil pan into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

  1. Remove bolts (2) and remove sound suppression panel (1), if equipped.

  1. Remove bolts (3) that fasten the engine oil pan (4) to the cylinder block.

  1. Remove engine oil pan (4) .

  1. Some engines are equipped with a plate between the engine oil pan and the cylinder block. Remove the bolts and the plate from the cylinder block. Remove the plate gasket. The weight of the plate is approximately 24 kg (53 lb).

  1. Apply Tooling (A) on the sealing surface of the engine oil pan and on the connecting joints of the front plate, oil pan gasket, cylinder block, and the flywheel housing. Install a new gasket on the engine oil pan.

  1. Put a new gasket for the plate in position on the cylinder block and install the plate, if equipped.

  1. Put engine oil pan (4) in position and install bolts (3). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).

  1. Tighten the drain plug to a torque of 70 ± 15 N·m (52 ± 11 lb ft).

  1. If the engine is equipped with a sound suppression panel, put sound suppression panel (1) in position and install bolts (2) .

  1. Fill the engine to the correct level with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change".
