Note: The "US Robotics" and "Multi-Tech" modems are the only two external modems that have been qualified to operate with the UPS 250. The "US Robotics" and "Multi-Tech" modems are used in countries that have not approved the internal Socket Modems. In order to use an external modem, an adapter board must be installed on the System I/O Module. The customer is responsible for providing a receptacle that is protected by the UPS in order to supply power for the modem. Connect an external modem to the adapter board with a serial cable (9 pin to 25 pin).

The switches are the dual in-line package (DIP). The switches must be set to match to values that are listed in the following table.

If the modem does not respond, check the cables and check the power supplies.

  1. Use the front display panel of the UPS in order to enter the "pager numbers" and the "callback numbers". Use the front display panel of the UPS in order to change "pager numbers" and the "callback numbers". If paging is not desired, leave the pager number set to all blanks.

  1. From a telephone, dial the telephone number for the pager that was just setup in the system.

  1. After the last digit is dialed, use a watch to count the number of seconds from the time the last digit is dialed to the end of the "welcome message".

The following sentence is a typical automated "welcome message". You have reached an XYZ numeric pager. Enter the numeric message, and press the "Pound" key.

  1. When the automated "welcome message" is complete, stop counting the seconds. Remember this number. The Pager Silence Interval is the number of seconds that were counted.

  1. In UPS View, select "Enter Password" menu option in order to view the "Enter User Name / Password" dialog box.

    Illustration 4g00697157

Testing the Configuration of the Pager from the Front Display Panel of the UPS

  1. In order to test the configuration of the pager, select "Menu / Settings / Pager Settings / Cancel or Test Pager".

The Display screen should display "Idle" for the state of the pager.

  1. Press the "Test" button. The display screen should change from "Idle" to "Test". The test will initiate a single attempt of a page .

  1. If everything is configured correctly, the pager should register a page and the Display should change back to the "Idle" state. If this does not occur, try adjusting the Pager Silence Interval and try checking the configuration of the hardware.

Connect to a telephone jack for the UPS by using a telephone adapter that has a dual input. This connection will allow the modem to be monitored.

Using UPS View to Cancel a Page

After the unit sends a page, the unit should accept an incoming connection to UPS View via a modem. A message screen that displays "Buzzer is Active" will appear on the screen.

When the "Buzzer is Active" window in UPS View is closed by pressing "OK", the buzzer is silenced and the paging function is cancelled.

Note: Silencing the buzzer for the UPS by pressing the "Silence" key on the UPS will NOT cancel the paging function.

Table 4
Codes for the Pager
Type     Number
Alarm     "11 + Callback Number + 911"
Notice     "11 + Callback Number + 311"
Test     "11 + Callback Number + 411"

Modem Strings

The modem string can be changed. Unless you are extremely familiar with the installation of a modem, use the default. This capability should allow the custom configuration of the modem. Whenever the type of modem is changed, the appropriate modem string is recalled from ROM. Entering "Control-Q" from UPS View will store the modem string in the Modem's NVRAM.

Note: If a modem connection exists and an event occurs, a paging function will not occur.

Note: If a serial connection exists and an event occurs, a paging function will not occur.

Note: When a modem connection is made, the paging function is cancelled.

Note: The Paging function will occur only if a pager number and callback number have been entered.
