Start By:

  1. Remove the final drive and wheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive and Wheel - Remove".

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Loosen three locknuts (2) and tighten three adjusting screws (3) in order to retain the brake discs in position.

    Note: Turn adjusting screws (3) in a counterclockwise direction in order to retain the brake discs in position. Adjusting screws (3) should only turn less than one revolution.

  2. Loosen locknut (4) and remove grub screw (5).

  3. Use a second person to help you support axle shaft (1) while you carefully withdraw the axle shaft. The weight of the axle shaft is 17 kg (38 lb).

  4. Use tool (A) to remove snap ring (6). Use a rubber mallet to strike bushing (7) in order to free the bushing. Slide the bushing off axle shaft (1).

  5. Use tool (B) to remove snap ring (8). Turn over bushing (7) and use tool (C) to remove ball bearing (9).

  6. Use tool (C) to remove seal (10). Remove O-ring (11).

  7. Install a suitable sling and a suitable hoist in order to support axle housing (12). The weight of the axle housing is 65 kg (140 lb). Remove 12 bolts (13) and two nuts (14) in order to remove axle housing (12).

    Note: All axle shafts can be removed and installed without removing axle housing (12) except the left front axle shaft.
