PF-300B and PS-300B Pneumatic Compactors Propel System Caterpillar

Power Train Troubleshooting

Usage:

PS-300B 4PN

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Probable Causes of Problems in the Power Train System

The clutch pressure is low.

Probable Cause

  • The oil level is low.

  • The spool in the pressure regulator valve is stuck open.

  • The gear pump is faulty.

  • The clutch shaft is broken or worn.

  • The piston rings are broken or worn.

  • The purge valve for the clutch piston is stuck open.

Problem

The output from the gear pump is low.

Probable Cause

  • Low oil pressure.

  • The suction screen is plugged.

  • The oil pump is faulty.

Problem

The transmission and the torque converter are overheating.

Probable Cause

  • The oil seal rings are worn.

  • The oil pump is worn.

  • The oil level is low.

Problem

The torque converter is noisy.

Problem

Lack of power

Probable Cause

  • The oil seal rings are worn.

  • The oil pump is worn.

  • The oil level is low.

Problem

There is constant noise in the differential.

Probable Cause

  • The lubricant level is low.

  • The lubricant level is high.

  • The wrong type of lubricant is used.

  • The wheel bearings are faulty or out of adjustment.

  • The pinion and ring gear have incorrect tooth contact or backlash.

  • The pinion bearings are loose or worn.

  • The side bearings are loose or worn.

Problem

There is a noise in the differential at different intervals.

Probable Cause

  • Bolts on the ring gear are loose.

  • Ring gear is warped.

  • The differential bearings are loose or broken.

Problem

The differential is noisy during turns.

Probable Cause

  • The differential bearings are too tight on the retainer pins or on the pinion shaft.

  • The side gears are too tight in the differential case.

  • The differential pinion gear or the side gears are faulty.

  • The thrust washers are worn or damaged.

  • There is excessive backlash between the side gears and the pinion gear.

Problem

Lubricant leaks.

Probable Cause

  • There is loss through the axle shafts.

  • The oil level is too high.

  • Incorrect oil is used.

  • The axle housing breather is blocked.

  • The oil seal for the pinion is worn or the seal is not installed properly.
