Bucket - Install

Usage:

988G 2TW

Break-In Procedure

When a new pin is installed in a used bearing, inspect the coating on the bearing. If the coating is worn and the metal is exposed, the bearing should also be replaced. If the coating is present, it is important to gently break in the new pin after installation of the bucket.

  1. Raise an empty bucket to 1/3 maximum height.

  2. Lower the bucket to the ground and apply slight downward pressure. The downward pressure reverses the direction of the load on the pin.

  3. Repeat this procedure for 20 to 30 cycles. Then, gradually increase the height of the bucket at each cycle until the maximum height is reached.

  4. Load the bucket halfway. Repeat Steps 1 through 3. Then, repeat Steps 1 through 3 with a full bucket.

Installation Procedure

Note: Alignment of the pin joints is an important factor. The pins that are used in the pin joints are a slip fit. It is important to relieve the pin joint pressure from the pin joints that are being serviced. It is important to park the machine on a surface that is flat and level. Use the implement hydraulics, hoists, or suitable lifting devices in order to relieve the pin joint pressure. Use Illustration 1 as a guide for the pins and the pin joints that are referenced in this procedure.

  1. Thoroughly clean the four collar bores in the bucket. Apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the collar bores of the bucket prior to the installation of the collars.

Note: The outside diameter of the collar is a slip fit in the B-pin bore.

  2. Install four collars (12) in the B-pin bores of the bucket.

  3. Apply 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease to the bearing bores of the bucket links and of the boom.

  4. Attach a suitable hoist and lifting chains to the bucket. The weight of the bucket is 4080 kg (9000 lb).

  5. Lift the bucket into position.

Note: Make sure that the bores for the bucket and the bores for the boom are aligned.

Note: Make sure that the bucket remains suspended until the B-pins are completely installed.

  6. Lubricate B-pin (6) with 5P-0960 Grease.

  7. Use two persons in order to install B-pin (6). The weight of B-pin (6) is 29 kg (64 lb).

Note: B-pin (6) is a slip fit in the bores. Proper alignment is important. Do not use excessive force to install B-pin (6).

  8. Install plate (11), bolt (9), the washer, and nut (10).

  9. Install plate (8), the washers, and bolts (7) in order to secure B-pin (6).

  10. Add 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease to the grease zerks until grease seeps from the lip seals.

  11. Repeat Steps 6 through 10 for the remaining B-pin.

  12. Tighten bolts (10) to a torque of 1600 ± 200 N·m (1180 ± 150 lb ft).

  13. Use a suitable hoist and a suitable lifting sling in order to lift bucket link (2) into position. The weight of bucket link (2) is 263 kg (580 lb).

Note: Do not remove the hoist and the lifting sling until the C-pin is installed.

  14. Lubricate C-pin (5) with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease.

Note: C-pin (5) is a slip fit in the bores. Proper alignment is important. Do not use excessive force to install C-pin (5).

  15. Use two persons in order to carefully install C-pin (5). The weight of C-pin (5) is 29 kg (64 lb).

  16. Install plate (4), the washers, and bolts (3).

  17. Add 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease to the grease zerks until grease seeps from the lip seals.

  18. Repeat Steps 13 through 17 for the remaining C-pin.

End By:

  1. Separate the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".
