Service Magazine SEPD0637, 08 July 2002, "Change in Oil Recommendations for the Final Drive and the Rear Axle in Off-Highway Trucks". The recommended cleanliness has changed. Disregard this article. Replace the article with the information that follows.

ReferenceRefer to Operations and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendation". This article replaces all publications which contain a table with the title "Recommendation for Lubricant Viscosities for Ambient (Outside) Temperatures for Off-Highway Trucks".

Description of Change: Caterpillar has developed a new oil to use with the following components of the off-highway truck: final drives, differential and axles. The new Caterpillar Final Drive and Axle Oil (FDAO) is recommended for use in all off-highway trucks.

Adaptable To: The new Caterpillar FDAO SAE 60 is used in the factory to fill the front wheels, the rear axle, and the final drives of off-highway trucks. This change is effective with the following serial numbers: 769D (S/N: 5SS458; BBB1), 771D (S/N: 6YS280; BCA1), 773D (S/N: 7CS612), 773E (S/N: BDA1), 775D (S/N: 8AS352), 775E (S/N: BEC1), 776D (S/N: AFS77), 777D (S/N: AGC559), 777D HAA (S/N: AGY77), 784C (S/N: 2PZ1), 785C (S/N: APX183), 785C HAA (S/N: 5AZ400), 789C (S/N: 2BW149), 793C (S/N: ATY259; CBR1), 793D (S/N: FDB1-UP), 793F (S/N: SSP1-UP), 797 (S/N: 5YW243), 797B (S/N: JSM1) and 797F (S/N: LAJ1-UP).

The FDAO is adaptable to all earlier models.

The FDAO is compatible with Duo-Cone toric seal rings. The FDAO will improve the life of the bearings and of the gears through an additive package that is specifically design for this purpose.

The change interval for the differential/final drive oil can be increased to 4000 hours with the use of FDAO or with the use an oil that meets the Caterpillar FD-1 Specification.

The oil change interval can be extended beyond 4000 hours if all of the following conditions are met:

  • Use FDAO or use an oil that meets the Caterpillar FD-1 Specification.

  • On trucks that are equipped with the lubrication systems for the rear axle and on trucks that are equipped with filtration systems, use Caterpillar filters or use a commercial filter with an equivalent performance.

  • Use 183-9301 Filter Cart at the regular service intervals on trucks that are not equipped with the lubrication systems for the rear axle and on trucks that are not equipped with the filtration systems. To improve the cleanliness of oil that is in trucks that are equipped with lubrication systems for the rear axle and for trucks that are equipped with filtration systems, use the 183-9301 Filter Cart at regular service intervals.

  • Use the following recommendations of particle count for management of differential/final drive oil in off-highway trucks. The recommended target for cleanliness is ISO 18/15 or cleaner after any of the following activities: repair, rebuild and preventive maintenance. The recommended target for cleanliness for operating in the field is ISO 21/17 or cleaner. Monitor the cleanliness of the system by the trend of particle count analysis of the oil. If the contamination level is more than ISO 21/17, determine the cause of the buildup of contaminants. Corrective action must be taken in order to return the system to the concentration that is desired.

  • Do not allow the oxidation in the oil to exceed 80 percent of the allowable oxidation.

The following table shows the part numbers for the FDAO.
