Capacitor - Test

(1) Capacitor

(2) Capacitor terminals

  1. Remove capacitor (1) from the alternator.

  1. Connect the terminals (2) of the capacitor together with a jumper wire. This discharges the capacitor.

    Note: The capacitor (1) must be discharged after step 3 is completed.

  1. Set the multimeter to the "20M ohm" resistance scale. Connect the multimeter leads to the capacitor terminals (2) .

  1. The multimeter reading should indicate very low resistance for a short period of time. The multimeter reading should then stabilize above 100 k Ohms(0.100 M Ohms).

  1. If the multimeter reading is not within the tolerance, replace the capacitor.
