Note: The disassembly and assembly procedures are of the 9X-6796 Alternator Gp. The other 21-SI alternators are similar.
Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
- Remove the alternator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Alternator - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

- Use a 5/16 inch allen wrench to hold the rotor shaft. Remove the pulley nut and remove the washer. Remove the pulley from the rotor shaft. A puller may be required to remove the pulley.
- Remove fan (1) from the alternator.
- For proper assembly, mark the alternator from drive frame (3) to rear frame (4). Remove four bolts (2). Separate drive frame (3) from rear frame (4) .

- Remove three bolts (5) and remove retainer (6) from the drive frame. Remove bearing (7). It may be necessary to use a hydraulic press to remove bearing (7) from the drive frame.

- Remove rotor (8) from rear frame (4) .

- Remove three nuts (9) and remove stator (10) from the rear frame (4) .

- Remove insulated screw (17) and remove diode assembly (14). Remove R terminal (12) and remove connector strap (13). Remove B+ terminal (11) and remove nut (16). Remove connector strap (15) .

- Remove insulated screw (19) and remove screw (22). Remove brush holder (18). Remove screw (21) and remove regulator (20) .

- Remove insulated screw (26) and remove screw (25). Remove capacitor (27). Remove screw (23) and remove rectifier (24) .

- Remove bearing (28) from the rear frame.
