- Is recorded when the VIMSTM Main ECM cannot communicate with the Engine ECM over the Cat® data-link.
- Indicates failed or intermittent VIMSTM operations that are related to the Engine ECM.
Note: This code can be generated when the Engine Fan Control is off. Verify that the Engine Fan Control is on. The Engine Fan Control can be accessed in Engine Configuration Parameters with Caterpillar® Electronic Technician (Cat® ET).
- VERIFY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
- Verify that the part numbers of the following are correct:
- VIMS Main ECM
- VIMS configuration software
- Engine ECM
- Engine ECM flash software
Note: Consult the product business unit for the correct configuration software part numbers.
Expected Result: All part numbers are correct.
Results:
- OK - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to Step 2.
- NOT OK - All part numbers are not correct.
Install the correct ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
Flash the correct configuration software. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".
STOP.
- Verify that the part numbers of the following are correct:
- INSPECT THE HARNESS
- Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
- Inspect the connectors, pins, and sockets for the following:
- Cleanliness
- Security
- Proper mating
- Seal condition
- Moisture
- Corrosion
- Inspect the wires at the connector for the following:
- Security
- Nicks
- Abrasion
Note: Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.
- Inspect the harness for the following:
- Damage
- Abrasion
- Kinks
Expected Result: The harness is in good condition.
Results:
- OK - The harness is in good condition. Proceed to Step 3.
- NOT OK - The harness is not in good condition.
Repair or replace the harness.
STOP.
- CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND
The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain off.
- Disconnect the harness from all ECMs that use Cat data-link.
- At the connector for the VIMS Main ECM, measure the harness resistance between frame ground and the following contacts:
- All Cat data-link -
- All Cat data-link +
Expected Result: All resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
- OK - All resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Step 4.
- NOT OK - A resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The harness is a shorted. Repair or replace the harness.
STOP.
- CHECK FOR SHORTS TO +BATTERY
The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain off.
The harness remains disconnected from the ECMs.
- At the connector for the VIMS Main ECM, measure harness resistance between the following contacts:
- All +battery and all Cat data-link -
- All +battery and all Cat data-link +
Expected Result: All resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
- OK - All resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Step 5.
- NOT OK - A resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The harness is shorted. Repair or replace the harness.
STOP.
- At the connector for the VIMS Main ECM, measure harness resistance between the following contacts:
- CHECK FOR OPEN HARNESS
The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain off.
The harness remains disconnected from the ECMs.
- Measure harness resistance between the following contacts:
- All VIMS Main ECM Cat data-link - and all Engine ECM Cat data-link -
- All VIMS Main ECM Cat data-link + and all Engine ECM Cat data-link +
Expected Result: The resistance is less than 5 ohms.
Results:
- OK - All resistance is less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Step 6.
- NOT OK - A resistance is greater than 5 ohms. The harness is open. Repair or replace the harness.
STOP.
- Measure harness resistance between the following contacts:
- CHECK FOR OTHER DIAGNOSTIC CODES
The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain off.
- Reconnect the disconnected ECMs.
- Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
- Check for other diagnostic codes.
Expected Result: Other diagnostic codes are not present.
Results:
- OK - Other diagnostic codes are not present. The Engine ECM may have failed. Contact your Technical Communicator. If the ECM requires replacement, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". STOP.
- NOT OK - Other diagnostic codes are present. Perform the troubleshooting procedure for those diagnostic codes. STOP.
