Some of the 3054 Engines are equipped with a closed breather system. The breather removes the combustion gases from the engine crankcase, and the breather directs the gases to the induction system.

An internal port in the rocker cover allows the passage of the gases from the crankcase into the breather body. The gases continue to flow through foam (3). Then, the gases flow through a series of baffles (6) and into the valve cover through holes at the bottom of the chamber for the baffles. A valve (1) controls the flow of gases which pass from the breather through elbow (4) to the intake manifold.

The valve cover and the breather assembly are made of a composite material. These parts should be removed and installed with care. The breather for the 3054 Machine Engine uses three baffles (6) .

Use the chart in order to identify the components of the crankcase breather system. The illustration is shown in order to locate the components.

Maintaining the Crankcase Breather System

Disassembly

Before performing any procedures, read the warnings and instructions that are contained in the safety section of the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Be sure that you understand the warnings and instructions that are contained in the Safety section.

1. Carefully release the hose clamp. Remove the hose from the elbow (4) on the breather.

2. Remove the valve cover. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual Module, "Disassemble and Assemble" for disassembly instructions.

NOTICE
Use care not to damage the breather cover or the breather body with a pry bar.

3. Remove the bolts. Carefully remove the breather cover from the breather body. Use a pry bar to remove the cover from the body of the breather. Be sure that the pry bar does not damage the cover or the body. Remove the gasket (5) and discard the gasket.

   Note: The valve (1) should be replaced after 4000 hours of operation. The foam (3) should be replaced after 2000 hours of operation.

4. Release clip retainers (2) on valve (1) and push the valve out of the breather cover.

5. Remove foam (3) and discard the foam.

In order to prevent damage to the breather valve, remove the valve before the cover is washed.

Be sure that all of the cleaning fluid is removed before the breather is assembled.

6. Use a clean, nonflammable solvent in order to wash the following components: body of the breather, the cover, the baffles (6) and the elbow. These parts should be cleaned after 2000 hours of operation. Thoroughly dry the components after cleaning.

7. Be sure that the holes in the bottom of the chamber for the baffle plates are not restricted. Clean the holes, if necessary.

Assembly

1. Install plates (6) into the grooves in the breather body.

2. Install a new foam (3) into the breather body.

3. Install a new valve (1) into the breather cover. Be sure that the clip retainers (2) are engaged correctly.

4. Install a new gasket (5). The gasket should be installed in a dry condition. Put the cover and the valve assembly into position on the breather body. Install the bolts loosely. Tighten the bolts gradually in an even rotation. The torque for the bolts is 3 N·m (27 lb in).

Do not use excessive force to fit the hose to the outlet elbow at the breather.

5. Make sure that there is no restriction in the breather elbow or in the breather hose. Carefully install the breather hose onto the elbow (4). Tighten the hose clamps that fasten the hose to the elbow.

Repair Procedure for the Outlet Elbow at the Breather

1. Make sure that the breather body is secure. Use a 22.5 mm (0.89 inch) drill bit. Drill a hole to the depth of 10.0 mm (0.39 inch) in order to remove the broken connection of the outlet elbow. Thoroughly clean the inside of the breather body.

2. Thoroughly clean the contact surfaces of the elbow and the breather cover.

3. Replace elbow (4). Be sure that the contact surface of the elbow at the connection has a rough finish. Put the elbow into position on the breather body.

4. Apply Permabond® E3524 adhesive in order to secure the elbow to the breather body. Apply the adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions.

   Note: Use Loctite® 3295 A/B as an alternate adhesive if the Permabond® E3524 adhesive is not available.
