Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

    Typical Example

  1. Remove the bolt and the washer that holds clip (3) to the valve cover base.

  1. Move clip (3) and the wiring harness out of the way.

  1. Remove bolts (1) and the washers.

  1. Remove the valve cover (2) and the seal from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


  1. Cut the seal to the correct length for the valve cover. Apply 3S-6252 Sealant to each joint surface after installation.

  1. Place the seal and the valve cover (2) on the valve cover base.

  1. Place clip (3) on the valve cover.

  1. Install the bolts (1) and the washers. Use the following procedure in order to tighten the bolts:

    1. Tighten bolts in a numerical sequence to a torque of 12 ± 3 N·m (9 ± 2 lb ft).

    1. Tighten bolts again in a numerical sequence to a torque of 12 ± 3 N·m (9 ± 2 lb ft).
