Throttle Synchronization Wiring for Electronic Marine Engines {1900}

Usage:

3412 3JK
Marine Engines:
3408C (S/N: 8RG1-UP)
3412C (S/N: 3JK1-UP)

Some installations for electronics on Caterpillar marine engines contain "+" battery and "-" battery connections that lead to the throttle synchronization switch. This wiring practice for the throttle synchronization switch can result in voltage transients that can damage the ECM data link circuitry on the 3408C or 3412C PEEC engines. Damage to the data link circuitry can cause a communication failure between the ECM and the following items:

  • Engine Vision

  • EMS

  • CMS

If the electronic marine display suggests replacing the ECM after troubleshooting a problem, check the wiring of the throttle synchronization switch. If the synchronization switch is connected to both "+" battery and "-" battery, remove the "+" battery connection to the switch. This should prevent the recurrence of the ECM data link failure.

Refer to Engine Installation Guide, SENR6446-02 for the guidelines for wiring the throttle synchronization switch.
