Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Remove three nuts (2) that hold valve mechanism cover (3) in position.

- Inspect the condition of three rubber washers (1). If the rubber washers are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
- Remove valve mechanism cover (3) and the rubber gasket from the engine. Inspect the rubber gasket for wear or damage. If the rubber gasket is worn or damaged, use a new part for replacement.
Installation Procedure

- Put the rubber gasket in position on valve mechanism cover (3) and install the valve mechanism cover on the engine.

- Install three rubber washers (1) and three nuts (2) that hold valve mechanism cover (3) in position.
- Tighten nuts (2) for a composite valve mechanism cover to a torque of 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
- Tighten nuts (2) for an aluminum valve mechanism cover to a torque of 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
