ECM Will Not Accept Factory Passwords

Usage:

The probable root causes are listed below:

  • Incorrect password

  • Incorrect engine serial number

  • Incorrect serial number for the Electronic Control Module (ECM)

  • Incorrect serial number for the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)

  • Total tattletale

  • Reason code

Perform the following checks:

  1. Check that each password was copied correctly. Verify that the passwords were entered correctly. Check for proper letters in each password. Cycle the power. Wait for 30 seconds and then retry.

  1. Verify that the engine serial number that is used to calculate the password is typed correctly. Refer to the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Factory Passwords" for more details.

  1. Verify that the following items are correct and that the items are entered correctly: total tattletale, reason code, serial number for Cat ET, serial number for the ECM and engine serial number. Refer to the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Factory Passwords" for more details.
