The service brakes on this machine are fluid activated caliper disc brakes. Head assembly (4) is fastened to the axle flange. The head assembly does not rotate with the wheels. The head assembly has six pistons (5). There are three pistons on each side of the disc. There is also a friction lining (7) on each side of the disc. Each lining is fastened to a metal backing (6). Linings (7) and backings (6) are held in place by anchor pins (1). When the brakes are activated, oil pushes pistons (5) and linings (5) against the discs.
Fluid flows through passages between the bores of pistons (5). Fluid then goes through a passage inside head assembly (4). When the brakes are activated, the hydraulic pressure moves all pistons (5). The amount of force on each side of discs (8) is equal.
Note: In order to remove linings (7) and metal backings (6), head assembly (4) does not need to be removed. Remove bolts (2) and anchor pins (1). Remove the linings and the metal backings.
