3114, 3116 and 3126 Engines Caterpillar

Alternator Charge Rate Is Low

Usage:

AP-1000 1HD

Probable Causes

The following list of probable causes for this condition is arranged in order of probability:

  • Loose alternator drive belt

  • Problem in the charging circuit

  • Faulty alternator or regulator

  • Faulty brushes in the alternator

  • Faulty rectifier diodes

  • Faulty rotor (field coil)

Recommended Repairs

Loose Alternator Drive Belts

  1. Inspect the condition of the alternator drive belts. If the alternator drive belts are worn or damaged, replace the belts.

  1. Check the tension on the alternator drive belts. Adjust the tension, if necessary.

Problem in the Charging Circuit

Inspect the battery cables, wiring, and connections in the charging circuit. Clean all connections and tighten all connections. Replace any faulty parts.

Faulty Alternator or Regulator

  1. Verify that the alternator or the regulator is faulty. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" for the proper testing procedures.

  1. Repair the alternator or replace the alternator.

Faulty Brushes in the Alternator

Install new brushes in the alternator.

Faulty Rectifier Diodes

Install a new rectifier diode.

Faulty Rotor (field coil)

Install a new rotor.
