Accessing Flash Software for Machines{7610, 7620}

Introduction

Flash software for Caterpillar Engines and Caterpillar Machines may be obtained through the following sources:

  • Caterpillar Web Access Module

  • The Service Information System (SIS) CD-ROM

  • The Service Information System (SIS) Web

  • The Corporate Mailbox

The following instruction explains the different ways to access the sources for Flash Software. The following instruction also explains the different ways to use each of the sources for Flash Software.

The Web Access Module

The Web Access Module is the preferred method for accessing Flash Software. This method provides you with access to the latest releases. The files are updated daily when updating is required. The system is accessed via the internet.

Complete the following procedure in order to gain access:

  1. Gain access to the public internet through an internet service provider or gain access to the dealer extranet. Information about an extranet connection is available through your dealership's SIS Coordinator.

  1. Install one of the following web browsers:

    • Netscape Navigator 3.0 or a higher version

    • Netscape Navigator 3.0 or a higher version

  1. Send an e-mail to Roger Proctor.

    Proctor_Roger_C@cat.com

    Include the following information in the e-mail:

    • A request for the Web Access Module

    • The Dealership's name

    • The Dealer's code

    • The Dealer's mailing address

    • A point of contact at the Dealership

    • A phone number for the point of contact

    • The point of contact's address for e-mail

  1. Indicate if the request will be replacing an existing HYPERACCESS 5.0 installation.

After the request has been processed, the login information and documentation will be forwarded to the user. This information provides instructions for using the Web Access Module.

The server uses a secured Universal Resource Locator addresses or URL. The addresses are used in order to direct the browser to the web site. The address and login screen are shown here:

The Login Procedure

Signing onto the Web Access Module

Enter your supplier or enter your dealer code in the "Username" field. Enter the information in uppercase letters. Enter your password in the "Password" field. Then click on the "OK" button. The Web Access Module will now validate your login. The system will display the "Password Change" screen. Change your password. This only occurs when you enter the system for the first time. Every thirty days change the password.

Note: The Web Access Module's login fields are case sensitive. Entries that are made in lowercase letters are invalid.

Using the Out Mailbox

The out mailbox is used in order to create a message and the out mailbox is used in order to send a message. The screen will appear different to each user. This is based on the functionality that is authorized. The possible functions are in the following list:

  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Forms

  • Local Files

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Forms

This function is used in order to request a specific Flash Software File.

  1. Select the "Flash Download" choice.

    1. Position the cursor over the list for the first section.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

    1. Highlight the "Flash Download" choice.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

  1. Select the "Custom Form (Flash)" option.

    1. Position the cursor over the list for the second selection.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

    1. Highlight the "Custom Form (Flash)" selection.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

  1. Position the cursor over the "Create New Document" button and click on the left mouse button.

    A new screen will be displayed with all of the Flash Files that are available for downloading. The user can scroll through the list of the Flash Files. In order to scroll through the list of files, click on the scroll bar. The scroll bar is to the right side of the list of files.

    The user may download one or more files. Use the following procedure in order to select the file to be downloaded:

    1. To select a single file, scroll through the list until the desired file is displayed.

    1. Place the cursor over the number of the file.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

    1. Place the cursor on the "OK" button.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

    1. To select multiple files, scroll through the list until the desired files are displayed.

    1. Place the cursor over the number of the file.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

    1. Scroll through the list until the next desired file is displayed.

    1. Place the cursor over the number of the file.

    1. Depress the "CTRL" key and hold the "CTRL" key. Do not release the key.

    1. Press the left mouse button.

    1. Release the "CTRL" key.

    1. Repeat 3.i through 3.m for each additional file. When all the files have been selected proceed to 3.o.

    1. Click on the "OK" button.

      A screen for the verification of the Flash Files that were requested is displayed.

    1. Place the cursor over the "Return to Out Box" button and press the left mouse button.

      The request for the selected Flash Files will be placed with the mailbox system. The system delivers the files to your in mailbox.

    1. A verification of the request will be acknowledged by the display of your out mailbox. You will receive a message that indicates that your message was successfully sent.

      Place the cursor over the "OK" button and press the left mouse button.

    1. Place the cursor over the in mailbox icon and press the left mouse button.

Using the In Mailbox

The In Mailbox screen displays all of the files that have been delivered to your supplier or the In Mailbox screen displays all of the files that have been delivered to your dealer code.

The entry in the in mailbox identifies the following information: incoming message's sender, type of message, size of the file, the date and the time of receipt and the status of the file. Each heading of the columns is a push button. Clicking on a heading of the columns will classify the entries. The entries are classified in ascending order. The entries are classified by the data that is in that field.

The "In Mailbox" screen consists of the following options:

  • "Open Document in Form"

  • "View Document Text"

  • "Download Document"

  • "Delete Document"

  1. Select the option. Select the message.

    1. To select the desired option, place the cursor over the desired button. Press the left mouse button.

    1. To select the message, place the cursor over the desired button. Press the left mouse button.

      Note: Only one message can be selected at a time.

    1. To begin the desired option, click on the "Submit" button.

The Procedure for Downloading a Document

The option will download the message to the user's PC. The file can be saved to the hard drive or the file can be saved to a floppy disk.

When the option is selected, a popup screen is displayed. The message on the popup screen indicates that Netscape needs to know the file type. Select the "Save File" option.

Netscape allows the user to select the storage location. The file can be saved to any location on the PC that is desired by the user. The file is now ready to be imported. The file may be imported into other applications.

After the file has been extracted and after the file has been saved, the user may delete the file from the in mailbox. This is done if the file is no longer needed.

The Procedure for Deleting a Document

The "Delete Document" option will delete the incoming file from the Web Access Module. Once the message has been extracted and the message has been saved, the message should be deleted from the Web Access Module.

Note: There is an automatic purge of the mailbox system. The purge deletes messages that are older than 30 days. Once the message has been deleted the message can not be retrieved.

Service Information System (SIS) CD-ROM

The Flash Files can be found on the Software, RERA9020, "SIS Setup and Tool Guide CD". These files are located in the "FLASH" directory.

The readme files are also located on the Software, RERA9020, "SIS Setup and Tool Guide CD". The readme file has instructions for installing the Flash programs and for using the Flash Files. A file that contains information for the cross referencing of Flash Files is provided. The file is located in the "FLASH" directory.

SIS CD-ROMs provide convenient access to Flash Files. The SIS CD-ROM does not incur the time and expense of downloading files through the on-line methods. The on-line methods still provide the most current files. The on-line methods are updated daily.

The Flash Files on the CD-ROM are updated monthly. New files are added and noncurrent files are deleted. The files can be accessed directly from the CD or the files can be copied to the PC.

Service Information System (SIS) Web

SIS Web is used for the delivery of service information to the dealerships. SIS Web contains parts and service information on all products that have been shipped since 1977. The Web provides access to the most current and accurate information that is available.

To get access to the system, contact your SIS Coordinator. Each region has a coordinator. The internet provider has the responsibility for the following issues:

  • TCP/IP connectivity

  • The conversion of the line from the Frame Relay to theTCP/IP

  • Access to the extranet's firewall

  • Ongoing connectivity support

SIS Web can be purchased through a single subscription. The web can also be purchased through a SIS License.

Flash Files allow Caterpillar's Dealers to update the software for the Electronic Control Modules (ECM). Service tools such as VIMS PC and Electronic Technician are used to update the software. The files may be updated several times in each month.

Conduct the following procedure in order to view a list of available Flash Files:

  1. Select "Flash Software Files" from the SIS Web's Main Menu.

  1. In order to view a particular Flash File, type the number for the Flash File into the search box.

  1. Select the "SEARCH" button.

  1. In order to download a Flash File, place the cursor over the number of the Flash File.

  1. Press the right mouse button.

  1. If you are using a Netscape Navigator browser select the "Save Link As..." button. If you are using a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser select the "Save Link As..." button.

    This opens a "Save As" dialog box.

  1. You are in the "Save As" dialog box. Select the desired directory. Then click on the "Save" button. This will save the file to the selected directory.

Corporate Mailbox

Flash software is available via the parts distribution system on floppy disk and flash software is available via the Corporate Mailbox. When you order Flash software via the parts distribution system enter an "E" type of subheader for Corporate Mailbox orders. When you order Flash software via the parts distribution system enter an "F" type of subheader in order to receive a floppy disk.

Do not use words or abbreviations in the subheader. Enter the machine's serial number and then enter the machine's model number. The two numbers are separated by a space.

If you do not have access to the Corporate Mailbox, proceed to ""Instructions for the Corporate Mailbox" ". If you enter a mailbox order without access to the system, the following message will be received. "No unsecured mailbox specified for this customer code". You will not be able to enter orders.

Instructions for the Corporate Mailbox

  1. You must purchase the following MS DOS communication software. HYPERACCESS 5.0, LERQ3133. The software can be purchased from your local supplier of software. The software can also be purchased from Caterpillar by calling the following phone number:

    1-800-566-7782.

  1. Call the Help Desk. The following phone numbers are available:

    1-800-435-7334, 1-309-675-0834

    You will be on the distribution menu. Press option 7. Inform the representative that you are interested in converting to the Flash system.

  1. Your dealership needs a mailbox that is defined on the system. This process will require the following information:

    • The Dealership's name

    • The Dealer's code

    • The Dealer's mailing address

    • A point of contact at the Dealership

    • A phone number for the point of contact

You may currently be using the old Flash System. The old system has 3 options on the menu. The old systems need to be upgraded. The upgraded Flash System has 6 options on the menu. The old system uses the same communication software as the new system. Old system users only need to get the new Flash program. Proceed to 1 in order to request the new program.

  1. Call the Help Desk. The following phone numbers are available:

    1-800-435-7334, 1-309-675-0834

    You will be on the distribution menu. Press option 7. Inform the representative that you are interested in converting to the Flash system.

  1. A mailbox will need to be created for the dealer on the Corporate Mailbox System. This process requires the following information:

    • The Dealership's name

    • The Dealer's code

    • The Dealer's mailing address

    • A point of contact at the Dealership

    • A phone number for the point of contact

When you order the software, allow several days for this process to be completed. The ability to download Flash Files is considered to be a tool. You will want to have the tool on hand before the tool is needed.
