Engine Electronic Control Module - Remove and Install

Usage:

994D 3TZ

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Install the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
  2. Connect the frame lock link. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Frame Lock Link - Separate and Connect".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: For easier assembly, mark all hose assemblies, tube assemblies, wire harnesses and cables for identification purposes.

  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Remove eight bolts (1), the washers, and screen (2) from the radiator guard assembly. Remove six bolts (3), the washers, and screen (4) from the radiator guard assembly.

  1. Disconnect two wiring harnesses (5) and (6) from engine electronic control module (7). Disconnect two fuel hoses (8) from engine electronic control module (7) .

  1. Remove four bolts (9) and the washers that secure engine electronic control module (7) to the mounting bracket. Remove engine electronic control module (7) from the mounting bracket.

  1. Remove seal wire (10) from the bolts. Remove four bolts (11) and the washers that secure the cover to engine electronic control module (7) .

  1. Remove the cover from engine electronic control module (7). Remove O-ring seal (12) from the cover. If necessary, remove the battery from engine electronic control module (7) .

  1. Remove four mount assemblies (13) from engine electronic control module (7). Remove ground strap (14) from engine electronic control module (7) .

Installation Procedure

Note: Verify that all of the components of the engine electronic control module are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.

Note: Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Install ground strap (14) to engine electronic control module (7). Install four mount assemblies (13) to engine electronic control module (7) .

  1. If necessary, install a new battery to engine electronic control module (7). Install O-ring seal (12) to the cover. Position the cover to engine electronic control module (7) .

  1. Install four bolts (11) and the washers that secure the cover to engine electronic control module (7). Install seal wire (10) to the bolts.

  1. Position engine electronic control module (7) to the mounting bracket. Position the grounding strap under the bolt. Install four bolts (9) and the washers that secure engine electronic control module (7) to the mounting bracket.

  1. Connect two fuel hoses (8) to engine electronic control module (7). Connect two wiring harnesses (5) and (6) to engine electronic control module (7) .

  1. Remove six bolts (3), the washers, and screen (4) from the radiator guard assembly. Remove six bolts (1), the washers, and screen (2) from the radiator guard assembly.

End By:

  1. Separate the frame lock link. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Frame Lock Link - Separate and Connect".
  2. Remove the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
