Pistons and Connecting Rods - Remove

Usage:

3406E 1MM

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove".

  2. Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Remove".

  3. Remove the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at the bottom center.

  2. Remove the carbon ridge from the top inside surface of the cylinder liner.

  3. Remove bolts (1) and the connecting rod bearing caps. Push the connecting rods and pistons until the piston rings are out of the cylinder liners.

  4. Remove piston (2) and the connecting rod from the cylinder liner.

  5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 in order to remove the remainder of the pistons and connecting rods.
