( 1 ) For the Caterpillar Monitoring System, the MID is "030". This table pertains only to diagnostics with an MID of "030".

When the main display module detects a diagnostic code while the main display module is in Normal mode, the "SERV CODE" indicator in the Display Area is activated. The Service Mode shows the diagnostic code for the detected diagnostic. For more detailed information, see Systems Operation, "Service Mode".

Note: When a diagnostic code is present, the corresponding warning for that sensor is also activated for the operator. For example, if this signal wire for the engine coolant temperature is shorted to +Battery, then the Caterpillar Monitoring System will respond in the following manner.

  1. The "SERV CODE" indicator is turned ON.

  1. The corresponding diagnostic code is stored in memory.

  1. The gauge for engine coolant temperature shows in the warning region.

  1. The alert indicator begins flashing.

The indications for Step 3 and Step 4 are the same warning indications that would be activated if the engine actually overheated.

Note: This Service Manual applies to Caterpillar Monitoring System diagnostics. When in Service Mode, diagnostics from the Engine Control Module (ECM) can also be displayed. The Caterpillar data link facilitates the transfer of diagnostic information from the engine ECM to the Main Display Module. This diagnostic information is shown when the Main Display Module is in Service Mode (Mode 2). The Module Identifier (MID) tells which electronic module is providing the diagnostic code. The MID for the Caterpillar Monitoring System is "030". Troubleshooting information for the MID's of other Caterpillar Electronic Module Systems can be found in the electronic troubleshooting guides for those systems.
