Tattletale Mode is Mode 4. Mode 4 is a management tool and Mode 4 is a maintenance tool. Tattletale Mode is used to learn an engine's history.
The Main Display Module records the extreme value for each engine condition that is monitored. These values are acquired from the following sources: sensor inputs and engine control module (ECM). These values are sent through the Caterpillar data link. When a more extreme value occurs, the Tattletale values are updated. After each engine start, these values are ignored for a short period of time. This allows the engine systems to stabilize before the recording of information begins.
Gauges show the lowest reading or the highest reading that has been attained by the engine system. The highest reading for gauges with increasing abnormal values and the lowest reading for gauges with decreasing abnormal values are shown on the gauges. For gauges that are double ended, the gauge alternates between the highest reading and the lowest reading.
Alert indicators turn on when an abnormal condition has existed.
Until the information is cleared, Tattletale information is retained. Moving the "CLEAR/MODE" switch to CLEAR erases the information. After clearing, all information is reset to a nominal value and the recording of new extreme values begins.
Note: When an extreme value occurs, there are several items which are not recorded: date, time and duration.
In order to more accurately show the information that is shown on the gauges, use the "SCROLL" switch to advance the readout to the first tattletale value. The readout will momentarily show the system identifier "GA-X" or "PA-X". The readout will then display the tattletale value. See the System Identifier Table in Systems Operation, "Numeric Readout Mode".

Press the "SCROLL" Switch again for each succeeding Tattletale value. The system identifier "GA-X" precedes the value that is shown on the Display Area if the gauges are present. If NO gauges are present, the system identifier "PA-X" precedes the value that is shown on the digital readout. In addition to the tattletale value that is shown on the readout, the gauge needle for the displayed tattletale value is active. All other gauges fall to the minimum position of the gauges.
Note: While the main display module is in Normal Mode (Mode 0), the Alert Indicators turn ON when an abnormal condition has occurred.
Until the information is cleared from the Main Display Module's memory, Tattletale information is retained. When the "MODE/CLEAR" switch is in the CLEAR position, all of the Tattletale information from the Main Display Module's memory can be cleared. When the Main Display Module's memory is cleared, "- -" must be displayed on the Display Area. After the information is cleared, all tattletale information is reset to a nominal value. The recording of new extreme values can begin. Individual tattletale values can be cleared one at a time by pushing the "MODE/CLEAR" switch to CLEAR while the tattletale value is being displayed on the Display Area.
