Assembly Procedure

Note: Make sure that all parts of the steering metering pump are clean prior to assembly. During assembly, apply clean SAE 10W oil on the internal parts of the steering metering pump.

1. Check the condition of all O-ring seals. If any seal is worn, use a new part for replacement.

2. Install O-ring seals (3) and (5) on seat (4). Install retainer (1), ball (2), seat (4) and plug (6) in the pump body. The torque for plug (6) is 11.3 N·m (100 lb in).

   Note: Make sure that the plug is flush with the surface of the pump body.

3. Install seals (7) and (8) in the bushing.

4. Install O-ring seal (9) in the housing. Install bushing (11) and spiral lockring (10) .

5. Install the three springs in spool (12). Make sure that the curves of the springs are in contact and in the center of the spool. The notched side of the spring ends must face toward the sleeve.

6. Install sleeve (13) over spool (12). The notch in the sleeve must engage with the ends of the springs.

7. Install pin (14) .

8. Put race (15), bearing (16) and race (17) in position on sleeve (13) .

9. Install the O-ring seal in the housing. Put plate (19) in position and make an alignment of the bolt holes. Some of the holes are oil passages.

10. Put drive (18) in position. Make sure that the notch in drive (18) engages with pin (14) in the sleeve assembly.

11. Install rotor (21) and spacer (20). Make sure that rotor (11) is aligned with pin (14) in the sleeve assembly, as shown.

12. Put O-ring seal (23) in position on barrel (22). Install barrel (22) onto the housing.

13. Align the bolt holes.

14. Put O-ring seal (25) in position on plate (24). Install plate (24) on the barrel. Align the bolt holes.

15. Install seven bolts (26). Tighten the bolts in the following manner:

    1. Tighten the bolts in the numerical sequence. (See Illustration 13.) The initial torque for the bolts is 14.1 ± 2.8 N·m (125 ± 25 lb in).

    2. Tighten the bolts again in the numerical sequence. (See Illustration 13.) The final torque for the bolts is 28.2 ± 2.8 N·m (250 ± 25 lb in).

End By: Install the metering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Metering Pump (Steering) - Install".
