Start By:

  1. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".
  2. Remove the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install".
  3. Remove the drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive shaft - Remove and Install".

Personal injury can result working with the tire and rim without precautions.

Personal injury can result if the weight shifts and causes movement of the tire and rim.

When starting nuts on the studs, do not put your arm between the rim and final drive without first wedging a block of oak between the rim and final drive.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the axle.

  1. Remove bolts (1) and front fender (2) on each side of the machine.

  1. Disconnect tube assembly (3) from the front axle.

  1. Attach suitable lifting devices (4) on each side of the front axle and apply a slight tension on the straps.

  1. Remove bolts (5) and the washers from the front axle.

  1. Lower the front axle from the machine and remove the front axle from the machine.
