Oil Pan - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Remove the crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install" .


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the oil system.

  1. Drain the engine oil in a suitable container for disposal. The capacity of the engine crankcase is 36 L (9.5 US gal) .

  1. Inspect the oil drain adapter for leaks around the gasket. If necessary, remove two bolts (1) and the washers that secure gasket (2) between the adapter and the oil pan. Replace the gasket. Reinstall the adapter, the two bolts, and the washers.

  1. Loosen retaining nut (3) . Disconnect oil hose (4) from oil pan (5) . Remove bolt (6) and the washer that secures wiring bracket (7) to the oil pan. Move the wires and the hose aside.

  1. Loosen retaining nut (8) . Disconnect hydraulic hose (9) from the screen assembly.

  1. Remove two bolts (10) and the washers that secure bracket (11) to the transmission oil cooler. Remove two bolts (12) and the washers that secure bracket (11) to the oil pan. Remove the bracket. To prevent seepage, reinstall two bolts (10) to the transmission oil cooler.

  1. Remove two bolts (13) that secure bracket (14) to the oil pan. Remove bolt (15) that secures bracket (14) to the transmission oil cooler. Remove the bracket. To prevent seepage, reinstall bolt (15) to the transmission oil cooler.

  1. Place Tooling (A) under oil pan (5) .

    Tooling (A) has been removed for photographic purposes.

  1. Remove 37 bolts (16) that secure oil pan (5) to the engine block.

  1. Lower Tooling (A) . Remove gasket (17) and the oil pan from the machine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  1. Inspect gasket (17) for the oil pan. If necessary, replace the gasket. Position the oil pan under the machine. Raise Tooling (A) .

    Tooling (A) has been removed for photographic purposes.

  1. Install 37 bolts (16) that secure oil pan (5) to the engine block.

  1. Before installing bracket (14) , remove bolt (15) from the transmission cooler. Position the bracket on the transmission oil cooler and the oil pan. Install bolt (15) and two bolts (13) that secure the bracket to the transmission oil cooler and the oil pan.

  1. Before installing bracket (11) , remove two bolts (10) from the transmission cooler. Position the bracket on the transmission oil cooler and the oil pan. Install two bolts (12) and two bolts (10) that secure the bracket to the oil pan and the transmission oil cooler.

  1. Connect hydraulic hose (9) to the screen assembly. Tighten retaining nut (8) .

  1. Place wires in the wiring bracket. Install bolt (6) and the washer that secures wiring bracket (7) to the oil pan. Connect oil hose (4) to oil pan (5) . Tighten retaining nut (3) .

  1. Fill the oil pan with the appropriate oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7143 for information on filling the engine crankcase.

End By: Install the crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install".
