Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health Always start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside. |
Note: Use the following procedure in order to start the tractor engine.
Note: The tractor engine must be started before the scraper engine will start.
Note: The key must be returned to the off position if the engine fails to start. The key will now function properly as you start the engine.

- Move the control levers to the HOLD position.
- Partially depress the governor control pedal. Continue to hold the governor control pedal as you crank the engine.
- Turn the engine start switch key (3) in order to start the engine. Release the engine start switch key when the engine starts. Release the governor control pedal after the engine starts.

NOTICE Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.
Turbocharger (if equipped) damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.
Show/hide tableNOTICE Start the scraper engine before moving the machine. This is necessary to provide lubrication to the scraper transmission.
Transmission damage can result if the machine is moved with the scraper engine stopped.
Note: Use the following procedure in order to start the scraper engine. The tractor engine must be started before the scraper engine will start.

Note: The governor control lever must be moved toward the back of the scraper to the FUEL-OFF position in order to shut off the engine once the engine is started.
- To start the engine, turn key (5) clockwise to the START position. After the engine starts, release the key.
- Governor control handle (6) may be pulled out in order to slightly increase the engine speed while the engine is warming up. Push in on the governor control handle in order to reduce engine speed.

NOTICE |
---|
Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly. Use sparingly, excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage. Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again. Use ether for cold starting purposes only. After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient. |

Note: The key must be returned to the OFF position if the engine fails to start. The key will again function properly when you try to start the engine.

For starting below −18°C (0°F), the use of cold weather starting aids is recommended. One of the following may be required.
- A coolant heater
- A fuel heater
- A jacket water heater
- Extra battery capacity
At temperatures below −23°C (−10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. For additional information, refer to the Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".
