Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
NOTICE |
---|
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the Cooling System Specifications section. |
Note: This procedure only pertains to Caterpillar Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC). This does not pertain to the machines that are shipped from the factory with Extended Life Coolant (ELC). Also, this does not pertain to the machines that are maintained with Extended Life Coolant (ELC).
Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.

- Slowly loosen the cap for the radiator and for the aftercooler in order to relieve system pressure. Remove the cap for the radiator and for the aftercooler.
- Open the drain valves for the radiator and the aftercooler. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.

- Close the drain valves. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.
Note: When the drain valves for the radiator and the aftercooler are opened, the coolant will drain from both systems. Opening one drain valve will drain that system. The other system will remain partially full.
- Start and operate the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.
- When the engine is stopped, flush the system with water until the draining water is clear. Drain the water into a suitable container.
- Close the drain valves.
- Add the coolant solution.

- Start the engine. Run the engine without the cap for the radiator and for the aftercooler. Run the engine until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
- Install the cap for the radiator and for the aftercooler.
Note: If you are using Caterpillar antifreeze, do not add the supplemental coolant additive at this time and/or change the element at this time.
