(10) MODE switch

(11) CLEAR switch

(12) SCROLL switch

The main display module of the Caterpillar Monitoring System is used to show information. A mode select switch is provided on the dash panel. Momentarily pushing the switch will allow the operator to scroll through the numeric readout modes that are listed below:

  • Ground speed

  • Digital tachometer

  • Cumulative odometer

  • Service hour meter

  • Diagnostic codes

Note: The unit indicators are automatically turned ON or OFF in order to correspond with the information that is shown on the numeric display. The values for the "odometer" may be displayed in either English units or metric units. Toggling between English and metric units can be performed with the control service tool or the ET.

Diagnostic codes

The operator mode switch may be used to view the active diagnostic codes and the logged diagnostic codes. The serv code indicator will be illuminated while active fault codes are displayed. The serv code indicator will be OFF while logged diagnostic codes are displayed. Diagnostic codes can also be displayed through use of the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool or the ET. Clearing any diagnostic codes will require use of one of these service tools.

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)

Illustration 3g00777826

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is a software program that is used to access data. The service technician will use the ET in order to perform the maintenance on the machine. Some of the options that are available with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician are listed below:

  • Diagnosis of problems

  • Viewing diagnostic codes

  • Viewing active event codes and logged event codes

  • View the status of parameters.

  • Clear active diagnostic codes and clear logged diagnostic codes

  • Perform calibration of machine systems.

  • Program the ECM (Flash). This is done with the "WINflash" program. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".

  • Print reports.

See Troubleshooting, "Using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician to Determine Diagnostic Codes". Diagnostic information is accessed with the following drop down menus:

  • Active diagnostic codes

  • Logged diagnostic codes

Logged Event Codes

Illustration 4g00859762

Logged events are provided with an indicator which is used to keep track of recurring or intermittent events. The data for the logged event shall include the following items: an event identifier (EID), a text description of the event, the number of occurrences of the event, a time stamp that shows the time that the event first occurred and a time stamp that shows the time that the event has most recently occurred .
