Usage:
The 1P2780 and 2P8233 Refrigerant Compressors have been cancelled. The repair kits for these compressors have also been cancelled. The replacement for 1P2780 is the 7N4297 Refrigerant Compressor. The replacement for 2P8233 is the 7N4296 Refrigerant Compressor. If reconditioning is needed for either of the two cancelled refrigerant compressors, the new 7N4295 Rebuild Kit can be used to make the repair, and make the former compressor just like the new 7N4296 or 7N4297 Refrigerant Compressors. This instruction gives the procedure needed to make the conversion.
(1) Remove the drive plate, the bearing shield assembly and the clutch and pulley assembly from the compressor housing.
(2) Make a mark on the compressor housing, directly opposite the electrical terminal (connection) that is on the coil. Remove the coil assembly and the outer gasket.
NOTE: Tool part numbers are given by Caterpillar part number with the Kent-Moore Corporation part number following in parenthesis ( ).
NOTE: For protection purposes there is a piece of packing material (heavy paper) between the pulley assembly and the clutch coil. Remove this packing material before the new parts are installed on the compressor.
(3) Clean the front head area of the compressor housing and the groove in the new coil where O-ring (1) will be installed. Install the new O-ring seal (1) in the groove in the back side of the 7N4287 Coil Assembly (2). Put the coil on the compressor housing so the electrical terminal is in alignment with the mark on the compressor housing.
(4) Install a new retainer ring (3) and new seal (4) in the inside diameter of the coil housing.
(5) Use the 5P7388 (J-9481) Bearing Installer and the 5P7400 (J-8092) Handle to install the new 7N4300 Pulley Assembly (5). Install retainer ring (6) so the flat surface of the ring is toward the bearing, then install a new 7N3804 Sleeve (7).
(6) Use the 5P7400 (J-8092) Handle (14) and 5P7418 (J-25379) Installer (15) to install shield retainer (8). Use 5P7416 (J-25378) Shield Installer (16) and a 5P7411 (J-26066) Puller to install shield (9). Be sure to start shield (9) straight. Tighten the puller bolt only until the shield is seated in the bore.
(7) Put the 7N809 Key (10) in the slot in hub and drive plate assembly (11). Clean the friction surfaces of the pulley, hub and drive plate assembly.
(8) Use a 5P7423 (J-9480-01) Hub and Drive Plate Installer, or similar tools, as shown, to install the hub and drive plate assembly (11). Pull the parts onto the shaft until there is approximately 3/32" (0.09) space between the friction surfaces of the drive plate and pulley.
(9) Install a new 9P8750 Nut (12).
NOTE: The new nut (12) is now used instead of the former spacer, retainer ring and nut.
(10) Use a 5P7417 (J-9403) Holding Tool and Socket, as shown, and tighten the nut to a torque of 14-16 lb.ft. (19-22). Clearance (A), between the drive plate and the clutch and pulley assembly, must be .022"-.057" (0.56-1.45). The clutch and pulley assembly must turn freely.
(11) Install dust cover (13).
(12) After the compressor is completely assembled, use a stamp to mark the new part number on the identification label on the compressor, according to the chart that follows.
(13) Install the compressor on the machine. Start the engine and test the operation of the air conditioning system according to the instructions in the OPERATION CHECKS AND TROUBLESHOOTING of the Service Manual.
