Drive Shaft - Remove and Install

Usage:

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the dust guard. Refer to Machine Systems, Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3437, "Dust Guard- Remove and Install".

  1. Park the machine on a flat, level surface. Lower the boom. Engage the parking brake. Chock the wheels in order to keep the machine from rolling when a drive shaft is removed.

  2. Put identification marks on each universal joint for installation purposes.

  3. Support transmission drive shaft (1). Remove eight bolts (2) and remove transmission drive shaft (1). The weight of the drive shaft is 7 kg (16 lb).

  4. Remove four twelve point head bolts (3) and two straps (4) from the front drive shaft or from the rear drive shaft.

  5. Remove four twelve point head bolts (5) and two straps (6) from the front drive shaft or from the rear drive shaft.

  6. Slide the drive shaft toward the rear of the machine and lower the drive shaft in order to remove the front drive shaft or the rear drive shaft from the machine. The weight of each drive shaft is 11 kg (25 lb).

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  2. Support transmission drive shaft (1) in position. Apply a small amount of 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to each of the eight new bolts (2). Install transmission drive shaft (1) with eight new bolts (2). Tighten the new bolts to a torque of 60 ± 5 N·m (45 ± 5 lb ft). The weight of the drive shaft is 7 kg (16 lb).

  3. Slide the drive shaft toward the front of the machine and raise the drive shaft in order to install the front drive shaft or the rear drive shaft onto the machine. The weight of each drive shaft is 11 kg (25 lb).

  4. Install two straps (4) and four new twelve point head bolts (3) for the front drive shaft or for the rear drive shaft. Tighten the new twelve point head bolts to a torque of 60 ± 5 N·m (45 ± 5 lb ft).

  5. Install two straps (6) and four new twelve point head bolts (5) for the front drive shaft or for the rear drive shaft. Tighten the new twelve point head bolts to a torque of 60 ± 5 N·m (45 ± 5 lb ft).

End By:

  1. Install the dust guard. Refer to Machine Systems, Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3437, "Dust Guard- Remove and Install".
