SUPPLEMENT TO OPERATION & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS FOR MACHINES POWERED Caterpillar

When Required

Usage:

Priming the Fuel System

Low Pressure Side of Pump

1. OPEN the VENT VALVE, on the pump housing.

2. Unlock and OPERATE the HAND PRIMING PUMP until fuel flows free of air bubbles from the vent drain line.

3. CLOSE the drain valve.

4. LOCK the priming pump.

High Pressure Side of Pump

If, after priming the low pressure system, the engine will not start, or runs rough after starting, the high pressure fuel lines must be primed.

Each injection pump has a reverse flow check valve. These cannot be opened with hand priming pump pressure. Use the following procedure to prime the high pressure fuel lines:

1. LOOSEN each of the FUEL LINE NUTS, at the cylinder head end, 1/2 turn.
2. To remove air in the injection lines, move the governor lever to LOW IDLE. Crank the engine.

3. When the fuel flows freely without bubbles, tighten nuts. Torque to 40.8 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb. ft.).

Ether Starting Aid - Changing Ether Cylinder

------ WARNING! ------

Ether is poison and flammable.

Do not smoke while changing cylinder.

Use only in well ventilated areas.

Use with care to avoid fires.

Do not store replacement ether cylinders in living areas or in operator's compartment - keep out of the reach of children.

Avoid breathing of vapors or repeated contact with skin.

Do not store cylinders at temperatures above 49°C (120°F).

Do not use cylinders in environments above 93°C (200°F).

Do not store cylinders in direct sunlight.

Do not puncture or burn cylinders.

Discard cylinders in a safe place.

------WARNING!--------

1. Loosen clamp (1) and UNSCREW the ETHER CYLINDER (2).
2. Remove the used gasket and install the new gasket provided with each new cylinder.
3. Install the new cylinder. Use Caterpillar part number 7N296 as a replacement cylinder. Tighten the cylinder hand tight. Refasten the cylinder clamp securely around the cylinder.
