If a crankshaft is regound, it must be rehardened after the grinding operation.
(1) Connecting rod journal diameter (standard, original size) ... 63.470 to 63.490 mm (2.4988 to 2.4996 in)
Minimum permissible diameter (worn) ... 63.431 mm (2.4973 in)
Connecting rod bearing inside diameter (standard) ... 63.520 to 63.548 mm (2.5008 to 2.5019 in)
Connecting rod bearing running clearance ... 0.030 to 0.079 mm (.0012 to .0031 in)
Connecting rod bearings are available for reground (machined) journals with undersizes ... 0.25, 0.51 and 0.76 mm (.010, .020 and .030 in)
(2) Main journal diameter (standard, original size) ... 76.159 to 76.180 mm (2.9984 to 2.9992 in)
Minimum permissible diameter (worn) ... 76.121 mm (2.9969 in)
(3) Main bearing inside diameter (standard) ... 76.225 to 76.266 mm (3.0010 to 3.0026 in)
Main bearing running clearance ... 0.046 to 0.107 mm (.0018 to .0042 in)
Main bearings are available for reground (machined) journals with undersizes ... 0.25, 0.51 and 0.76 mm (.010, .020 and .030 in)
(4), (6) Top and bottom thrust washer thickness:
Standard ... 2.26 to 2.31 mm (.089 to .091 in)
Oversize ... 2.44 to 2.51 mm (.096 to .099 in)
(5) End play of the crankshaft ... 0.10 to 0.38 mm (.004 to .015 in)
Maximum permissible end play ... 0.38 mm (.015 in)
New crankshafts have been introduced on the 4.236 engine. The new crankshaft has a three bolt pulley mount instead of a single bolt.
(7) Torque for crankshaft pulley retaining bolt (single bolt arrangement):
38.1 mm (1.50 in) bolt head:
Cadmium plated bolt (silver color) ... 320 N·m (240 lb ft)
Phosphated bolt (dull black color) ... 384 N·m (285 lb ft)
42.44 mm (1.67 in) bolt head ... 410 N·m (300 lb ft)
(8) Torque for crankshaft pulley retaining bolts (three bolt arrangement):
Tighten bolts and evenly in several stages to a torque of ... 95 N·m (70 lb ft)
