C175 Oil&Gas Offshore Engine Caterpillar

Turbocharger Turbine Speed Is High

Usage:

C175-16 P6N
Use this procedure to troubleshoot a high turbocharger turbine speed. Also, use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active or logged.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description  CDL Code and Description  Comments
1169-0
Engine Turbocharger #2 Speed : High - most severe (3)
E458 (3)
High Right Turbine Speed
The turbocharger turbine speed is higher than expected.
1169-8
Engine Turbocharger #2 Speed : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period
1671-8
Right Turbo Turbine Speed Sensor : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period
The turbocharger turbine speed is different than what is expected.
1169-15
Engine Turbocharger #2 Speed : High - least severe (1)
E458 (1)
High Right Turbine Speed
The turbocharger turbine speed is higher than expected.
1169-16
Engine Turbocharger #2 Speed : High - moderate severity (2)
E458 (2)
High Right Turbine Speed
The turbocharger turbine speed is higher than expected.

Probable Causes

  • Codes

  • Sensor

  • Inlet air system

  • Exhaust system

Recommended Actions

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.

Codes

Result: An associated code is active.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: An E458, 1169-0, 1169-15, or 1169-16 code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: A 1169-8 or 1671-8 code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

2. Compare Turbocharger Speed Sensors

A. Start the engine.

B. Connect Cat ET.

C. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameters:

- "Turbocharger speed sensors"

Sensor

Result: The turbocharger speed sensor readings are within 500 rpm.

Return to service.

Result: The turbocharger speed sensor readings are not within 500 rpm.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Inspect the Inlet Air System

A. Check the air filter restriction indicator, if equipped. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for additional information.

B. Measure the inlet air restriction for each turbocharger. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Is Restricted" for additional information.

C. Check the following inlet air system components for leaks:

- Hoses
- Tubes
- Bellows
- Clamps

Inlet Air System

Result: The inlet air system is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The inlet air system is NOT OK. An imbalance in the system is discovered.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged inlet air system components. Equalize the inlet air restriction for each of the turbochargers.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Inspect the Exhaust System

A. Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position.

B. Inspect the following exhaust components:

- Lines
- Hoses
- Bellows
- Clamps
- Exhaust manifolds

Note: Verify that all the bellows have the correct orientation. Ensure that the arrow on the bellows is pointing in the direction of the exhaust flow.

Exhaust System

Result: The exhaust system is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result: The exhaust system is NOT OK.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged exhaust components.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.

5. Replace the Turbocharger Speed Sensor

A. Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position.

B. Replace the turbocharger speed sensor.

C. Start the engine.

D. Connect Cat ET.

E. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameters:

- "Turbocharger 1 Speed"
- "Turbocharger 2 Speed"
- "Turbocharger 3 Speed"
- "Turbocharger 4 Speed"

F. Monitor the fault codes using Cat ET.

Sensor

Result: A code is not active.

Return to service.
