D348 MARINE ENGINE Caterpillar

Lubrication And Maintenance Chart D346-D348-D349 (40J1-Up), (38J1-Up), (62P1-Up) Marine Engines

Usage:

This LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE CHART lists the serviceable items usually installed on these engines. The items are listed according to their interval of servicing.

The intervals are based on readings of the engine's Service Meter. Every day the Service Meter should be observed. The servicing of each item in the chart should be performed at multiples of the heading. For example, "EVERY 10 SERVICE METER UNITS" means to perform that maintenance at every 10, 20, 30, etc. service meter units. For those items which cannot be serviced at a definite interval, see the section: "Non-Scheduled Items, When to Service Items".

For items marked "*", see the "KEY TO FUELS, LUBRICANTS AND WATER" on page 3 of this chart. "PAGE" refers to the LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES page number where detailed instructions can be found for that item.

FUEL: Use only distillate fuels (ASTM No. 1 or No. 2 Fuel Oil, or No. 1D or No. 2D Diesel Fuel Oil are examples) with a minimum cetane number of 35. Heavier oil is generally preferable because of its higher energy content.

CD: Oils which meet Engine Service Classification CD, or MIL-L-2104C.

CD/TO-2: Use an API Service Class CD oil which has satisfactory friction retention performance in the Caterpillar Oil Test No. TO-2, referred to as API CD/TO-2 Oil.

MPGM: Use Multipurpose-type Grease which contains both 3 to 5% molybdenum disulfide conforming to MIL-L-7866, and a suitable corrosion inhibitor. NLGI No. 2 Grade is suitable for most temperatures. NLGI No. 1 or No. 0 are suitable for extremely low temperatures.

BATTERY WATER: Use either distilled water, or, odorless, tasteless drinking water. Do not use mineral water, water containing iron, salt water or softened water.

ENGINE COOLANT: Use a solution of fresh water and Caterpillar Coolant System Inhibitor in temperatures above -20°F (-29°). When the temperature is below 32°F (0°C), a sufficient amount of antifreeze must be added to adequately protect your engine against freezing.
