The single camshaft (1) is driven at the front end. Seven bearings support the camshaft in the engine block. As the camshaft turns each of the camshaft lobes moves either two exhaust valves or two inlet valves for each cylinder. Camshaft gear (2) must be timed to the crankshaft gear. The relationship of the camshaft lobes to the crankshaft position cause the valves in each cylinder to operate at the correct time.
