The VIMS ECMs receive machine status information from the input devices. The ECM will use this information to determine the correct output action to control machine functions. This function is based on memory and software parameters. All of the components that supply inputs to the ECM are in one of the following groups:
- Switch inputs
- Sensor inputs
Switches provide signals to the switch inputs of the ECMs. The possible outputs of a switch are:
- Open signal
- Grounded signal
- Voltage signal
Sensors provide an electrical signal to the ECMs that constantly change. Several different types of electrical signals can be provided to the ECM inputs from different types of sensors. The different types of sensor inputs are:
- Pulse width modulated (PWM) signals
- Active analog (voltage) input signals
- Passive analog (resistance) input signals
The ECMs monitor many of the component circuits for diagnostics. If an ECM determines that an abnormal condition exists in one of the circuits, the ECM will log a diagnostic code for the involved component.
