Engine Oil and Filter - Change

Usage:

994K MM9

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.

Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Do not under fill or overfill engine crankcase with oil. Either condition can cause engine damage.

Note: Some commercial oils that meet API specifications may require shorter oil change intervals. The oil change intervals are determined by close monitoring of the oil condition and engine wear metals. Caterpillar prefers the scheduled oil sampling as the proper method of checking engine wear metals. Consult your Cat dealer for the latest oil recommendations.

Fast Fill Method

NOTICE

Do not under fill or overfill engine crankcase with oil. Either condition can cause engine damage.

Your machine is equipped with a fast fill service panel in the service center for changing the engine oil. The fast fill service panel allows the engine oil to be changed faster than the conventional method.

  1. Park the machine on a level surface. Lower the bucket to the ground and engage the parking brake.

  2. Shut off the engine and remove the engine start switch key.

  3. Open access door (2) to the service center that is located on the left-hand side of the rear bumper. The engine oil fast fill port is located in fast fill service panel (1).

Reference: For more information about using the engine oil fast fill port refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Service Center, Fast Fill Service Panel".

  4. Remove the protective cap and connect an oil pump to the engine oil fast fill port.

  5. Turn on the oil pump and withdraw the engine oil from the engine crankcase. Disconnect the oil pump and dispose of the used oil properly.

  6. Position a suitable container beneath engine oil drain hoses (3). The engine oil drain hoses are forward of the rear bumper below the engine compartment.

  7. Open the engine access doors on the right-hand side of the machine.

    (6) Engine oil filter housing drain valve

  8. Open engine oil filter housing drain valve (6). Oil will drain from the engine oil filter housing into the container that was positioned beneath the engine oil drain hoses in step 6.

  9. Close the engine oil filter housing drain valve when oil stops flowing from the drain hose. Remove the container from beneath the drain hoses and dispose of the used oil properly.

Note: Some oil will remain in the housing after the oil has been drained. This oil will flow out of the housing when cover (5) is removed. Prepare to catch the oil in a suitable container.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

  10. Gradually loosen but do not remove cover retaining bolts (4). Be alert to spring force against the cover. Before removing the bolts and washers, pry cover (5) loose, or tap the cover with a rubber mallet, in order to relieve any spring pressure.

Note: Be aware that an alignment pin is installed in one corner of the cover. This pin may cause resistance in allowing the cover to separate from the filter housing.

  11. Once spring pressure against the cover is relieved, remove cover retaining bolts and washers. Then, carefully remove the cover. Remove O-ring seal (7) if the seal remains within the filter housing.

  12. Remove three used filter elements (8) from the housing and dispose of properly.

  13. Wash the cover retaining bolts and washers, the cover, and the O-ring seal in clean, nonflammable solvent.

  14. Install new oil filter elements in the filter housing.

  15. Inspect the O-ring seal. Obtain a new O-ring seal if the old O-ring seal is damaged or deteriorated.

  16. Install the O-ring seal on the cover. Lubricate the O-ring seal and the step on the cover with a small amount of new engine oil.

Note: An alignment pin on the cover will allow the cover to be installed on the filter housing in only one position.

  17. Install the cover on the filter housing and install cover retaining bolts and washers. Tighten the cover retaining bolts evenly so that the cover does not bind with the filter housing. Finish tightening the bolts to a torque of 55 ± 7 N·m (40 ± 5 lb ft).

  18. Clean the end of the male coupler on the engine oil fast fill port. Connect an oil pump to the male coupler. Fill the crankcase with new oil.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the type of lubricant and for the refill capacity.

  19. Clean the end of the male coupler and install the protective cap on the coupler. Close the door to the fast fill service panel.

  20. Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle for 5 minutes. Inspect the engine oil filter assembly for oil leaks. Also, check that no oil is leaking from engine oil drain hoses (3). Make any necessary repairs.
